Daniel Deniehy

October 28, 2017 at 6:30pm - 9:30pm

Goulburn Soldiers Club 15 Market Street Goulburn, NSW 2580

The final years of Daniel Deniehy's life were undeniably tragic. Haunted by the death of his son, plagued by alcoholism, suffering depression and crippled by ill health, he passed away violently at the age of just 37 years.

The despair of Deneihy's death contrasts with the inspiration of his life, his brilliant oratory and his wit.

Deniehy was the first great native-born advocate of an Australian Republic. He serves as an example to modern republicans still licking their wounds from the disappointment of 1999. It is time for republicans to articulate a vision for the future, with boldness, passion, and above all, hope.

The 2017 Daniel Deniehy Oration will be presented by Dr Benjamin T Jones. Dr Jones is a historian, author and social commentator based at the School of History at the Australian National University. He is an expert on Australian republicanism and political history. His books include Athiesm for Christians(2016) Republicanism and Responsible Government (2014) and Project Republic (2013)
